Answers:
2. NOWHERE. Exodus 20:4 forbids the making of "graven images" or, another translation is, "idols" - statues that are worshipped in place of or as a substitute for the true God. In Exodus 25:18-21 and in Numbers 21:8-9 God actually commands the making of statues for religious purposes and even as channels of His healing grace. In addition, God also allows the making and veneration of statues as means for people to focus their worship on Him (Josh 7:6-8; 2 Samuel 6:13-15; 1 Kings 3:15, 8:5; 1 Chron 13:6, 16:4). Therefore, it is not the making and veneration of statues that is evil, but rather the use to which one puts the statue (ie. such as worshipping it in place of the true God Exodus 32:4-6; 2 Kings 18:4).
3. [c] Mary, Jesus' mother. Luke 2:35
4. The doctrine of the necessity of eating Christ's flesh and drinking His
blood in order to have eternal life. John 6:51-60; 6:66
5. Luke 11:27-28; 1:38, 48 (KJV) This in no way interferes with or detracts from the honor we owe to God alone. Jesus Himself says that if we wish to have eternal life (Mt. 19:16; Mk. 10:17; Lk. 18:18), one of the things we must do is honor our father and mother (Mt. 19:19; Mk. 10:19; Lk. 18:20). The kind of honor we give to God alone is called "latria" (worship/adoration - Ex. 20:3; Mt. 4:10). The kind of honor we give Mary is called "hyperdulia" (extreme or high honor - Lk. 1:28, 42, 48). The kind of honor we give our Christian brothers and sisters (as well as angels and saints in heaven) is called "dulia" (honor/respect - Rm. 12:10; Phil. 2:29-30; 1 Tim. 5:17).
6. BAPTISM. "and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge [1] of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ," 1 Peter 3:21 (RSV)
7. His motherÂ’s at the wedding feast at Cana. John 2:1-11
8. [c] NONE. No book of the Bible claims divine inspiration for itself. 2 Timothy 3:16 claims that all scripture is inspired by God, but it does not state which books (writings) are to be regarded as scripture and included as part of the Bible. That was determined by the bishops (guided by the Holy Spirit of course) at the Council of Hippo in 393 A.D. and the Council of Carthage in 397 A.D.
9. TRUE. Romans 8:15; Gal. 3:26, 4:4-5 and other passages refer to Christians as "sons" or "children of God". If we are children of God and Jesus is the Son of God (Luke 1:35; Mt. 16:16), then Jesus is our brother (Heb. 2:11, 17). Since Jesus is our brother, His Father is our Father (God: Mt. 6:9; Luke 11:2; John 20:17) and His mother is our mother (Mary: Jn. 19:26-27).
10. FALSE. Matthias succeeds Judas (Acts 1:20-26). Some time after Paul had his teaching confirmed by the apostles Peter, James and John (Gal. 2:2, 9), Paul passed on his teaching to Timothy and authorized him to entrust it to others who could in turn teach it to yet others (2 Tim. 2:2). This passing on of teaching authority from the apostles to their successors, and from their successors to yet others, and so on, Catholic Christians call "Apostolic Succession".
11. FALSE. Both Acts and Paul's letters give evidence of a Church structure beyond the local group. For example, in 1 Cor. 4:17-21; 5:3-5; 7:17 & Eph. 4:25-32, Paul exerts his authority over a group that he lived in proximity with for only a short time, and doing so even after local leadership was established Acts 20:17. Also, especially see Acts 15:1-31; 16:4.
12. His Church (Mt. 16:18; Eph. 3:10).
13. Doing the will of His Father, their words, charitable works toward their neighbor (Mt. 7:21; 12:36-37; 25:31-46).
15. Their works (Rm. 2:6-7; 1 Cor. 3:13).
Do some of these verses have a Catholic "ring" to them? Yes they do and so do many others. We invite you to come home to the faith of the fathers. Call or write to find out more and weigh all the evidence. May the peace of Christ be with you.
